Year 2014 in Review

Kamigami no Asobi

Here's to my first ever year in review! To start off, the animes are still dominated by otome adaptations with Kamigami no Asobi series, La Corda  d'Oro Blue Sky series, Hakuouki movie part 2, Jyuzaengi Engetsu Sangokuden OVA and Brothers Conflict OVA.

Otome apps in smartphones are also increasing by the numbers and in fact it spawned ONA, Bonjour Koiaji Patissierie. There's also numbers of otomes being ported to PS Vita, while a few were given English versions in mobile phones like  Heart no Kuni, Hakuouki and Hiiro no Kakera. There were also major news announced this year: the English version of Ozmafia, the third season of Uta Price no Sama anime series and the 20th anniversary remake of the first reverse harem game, Angelique.

There's a lone manga adaptation this year which is Akatsuki no Yona. There's other two announced projects based on mangas, the second season of Kamisama Hajimemashita anime series and  live action movie of Strobe Edge. Both projects to come out next year. I hope that it's a good sign of more manga adaptations to come.

The year was also big on stage play adaptation announcements. There's Brothers Conflict, Storm Lovers, Demon Prince,  another Hakuouki,  Heart no Kuni and Kamisama Hajimemashita.

I think the highlight of the year is getting into the world of reverse harem novels. I never saw it coming! And I have only touched the tip of the iceberg. There are still a lot of titles that I need to dive into. My favorite so far is The Ghost Bird Series and with Spearwood Academy as runner up.

In mangas, my favorite is Akatsuki no Yona. I could say in advance that it's my favorite anime too for the year but it's still currently airing. If I really have to pick a favorite anime of the year, I have no choice but to say Kamigami no Asobi since La Corda was a fail and I haven't seen Jyuza yet. I don't have a favorite drama for the year as I haven't seen the new reverse harem dramas that were recommended by readers and Records of a Night Watchman seems nowhere near to be a reverse harem. Let's not forget the ambitious Hollywood remake of Hana Yori Dango which is Boys Before Friends. It was placed on hiatus early this year.

This year I also started attending events and I met Jenny Han of young adult book, To All The Boys I've Loved Before and Emi Takei of jdrama, Asuko March, for the Rurouni Kenshin premier.

I feel like this year was the rebirth of this blog as I get really serious in improving all the aspects of the site. There's still lot of work to be done but I'm happy that I was able to finally start getting things happen. I think the most important improvement for me is that I have now made a conscious effort on my reviews. I cringe everytime I read my very, very short generic reviews. It will be hard for me to undo or re-do my old posts but moving forward I assure you that those days are over. I have so many plans in store for you for next year and let's hope for more reverse harem projects!

And to cap off the entire year, what the heck happened with Trick or Alice? I really thought the "2014" on its homepage meant it will air this year.

See ya all next year! ;)

Drama Review: Happy 300 Days

Happy 300 Days - 15 episodes

Chen Ya Ting, single and pregnant, returns back to her mother's seaside vacation inn in the country. Around the same time, they also receive three male guests who are all each troubled with their past. There's a fired architect, an alcoholic doctor and a fugitive gangster. The unlikely trio will band together to protect Ya Ting and her unborn baby and possibly be the husband/father too.

When I first saw the picture of Taiwanese drama from Viki, I was thinking a pregnant lady and three prospective husband/father candidates is indeed a reverse harem but for all the wrong reasons. But this is not the first reverse harem that dealt with pregnant heroines. The first of its kind is kdrama, Three Dads and a Mom. I don't have a paid Viki account so when I caught half of episode two in Screen Red on cable, I  just had to watch it everyday. It ran for an hour and thirty minutes but they split in into two 45-minutes episodes bringing it to a total of 23 episodes. I wouldn't normally finish this type of dramas this fast but since I don't have any other way to watch the subtitles, watch it I must!

I could relate with the heroine's pregnancy woes...A LOT! I guess the only thing that didn't happen to me is the peeing in her bed. They were able to pull of the timelapse factor by making her look more mature but they failed miserably in making her a believable pregnant woman. Where's the baby fat and bloating and all? But hey that probably too much of reality I guess.

I feel the production had way too many budget in their hands and just happened to create a reverse harem drama on a whim. The location is outstanding! There's the feel good soundtrack. Cute styling. The drama had the perfect recipe but it was too just too scripted and too cliched. I wanted to expect more. It can be hilarious at times but the corny antics outshined more. The most memorable scene is when one of the guys makes evil faces using the baby as a prop. That was really the most hysterical scene for me but at the same it was just so wrong because he is practically shaking the baby. But I'm a creature of habit and looking forward for it everyday for the two straight weeks became a routine to me. It grew on me like I never wanted it to stop. And being a housewife for about ten months now also played a big factor.

My favorite guy is the gangster, Yao Yang. He's really cute especially with his new haircut at the last part. I just couldn't stand his leopard prints. Happy is simply adorable and so does her acting! Wu Chen of reverse harem tdramas, Hana Kimi and Romantic Princess, also makes cameo.

This may not be your cup of tea especially to the younger audience but it's good that there's a reverse harem for every age and taste. Pregnant women represent! ;p

12 Days of Reverse Harem Christmas ver. 5

Here's my early Christmas treat for you! I'll be fixing the past versions and I'll upload it soon. I have also changed the first day now to heroines just like the very first version. It would be 12 days of bishonens now if there's no girl wouldn't it? Sorry I couldn't find bishies-only pictures for Akatuski no Yona, Real Rode and Ozmafia. I thought I'll be foregoing the 12 days this year but before I knew it I had the list completed. All the titles have manga/anime versions except for Ikemen. I'm also pleased to include four of the animes that aired this year. Please click like/favorite/add comment on YouTube if you've enjoyed it as much as I did.

Freshest News: BroCon Christmas OVA covers, KamiKiss airing date & chewing gum bishies

Here's the jacket covers of the deluxe and normal editions of the upcoming Brothers Conflict OVA. Taken via BroCon twitter. (I'll update again as soon I have a better translation of the synopsis XD)

The second season of Kamisama Hajimemashita will air on January 5, 2015. From official site

The chewing gum brand, "Lotte", has launched a campaign about a girl who turned into a tooth. The only way to get back to her human form is to "bite" into one of the chewing gums turned boys. More info on CR and ANN. (Not a fresh news though.)

I've also added Spearwood Academy Vol. 4 and Spearwood Boys Vol. 2 on Winter Reverse Harem 2015.

Anime Review: Starry Sky

Starry Sky - 26 episodes

Tsukiko is the only female student in the formerly all-boy astronomy school, Seigetsu Academy. She meets different boys (and men) who represent each of the constellations. There's no major goal or conflict in the anime. Can I say it's a slice of life? It's practically how the year went by with background stories and flashbacks of how they all meet and how they are related to each other.

I've been posting monthly wallpapers of Starry Sky for years now and all this time I had no idea of who they all are. I watched only three episodes back then and placed it on hold after finding it boring. But before I know it four springs, four summers, four autumns and three winters have passed. This is the most classic example of procrastination. Gomen! But now that I have finally finished watching it. I actually liked it. It's simple yet deep. Some arcs are fun, yet some arcs evoke sadness.

One of the major characteristics of Starry Sky is that they always have this poetry that looked like they used Google Translate because half the time it seems gibberish to me. But it reminds me of the cute stationary or letters, I used to collect when I was a kid. They’re colorful, glittery and sometimes scented. And then it hit me that the anime itself reminds me of these letters. It's beautiful to look at, delicate, dreamy and melancholic at times.

If my memory serves me right, Starry Sky is the very first reverse harem original net animation (ONA). Then came Diabolik Lovers and now Bonjour Koiaji Patissierie. Given its ONA which are generally short, there still some questions that were left hanging. I don't understand why she was crying, was it because of the forgotten memories? And what happened with the fake relationship with the teacher? It was never explored. And what's up with her hair bangs? Uh oops Please strike the last question. Irrelevant. Haha.

Starry Sky is also the first reverse harem anime to present the highest total count of official bishies in one go. But out of all the beautiful boys, I find my heart gravitating to childhood friend, Tohzuki (Cancer). His feelings for her is so sweet in a dark way and heartbreaking. When I revisited the poll which I ran before, he was the one who won! My next favorites are Nanami (Pisces) and Kazuki (Aries). I fancied them based on their background stories which do play a great part. Gemini arc is so sad. I was indifferent at first but after Libra's side was shown, it was so painful. I'm a Virgo and I hated that Hayato's personality is stoic.

Is there some special significance with the seasons? I liked the neat subsets or the groupings according to the seasons. If you think about it there are four tropes under the umbrella of all-boy school trope. And even though she's the only girl, I liked it that their feelings for her are not all over the place. There's no sense of being rushed or cornered with all the attention. I think the groupings solved the dilemma of how to build each boys individually. They're just so many! It also made the relationships more personal.

Do not be deceived by all the happy images that the anime conjures for first impressions. The fluffy cotton-candy exterior is actually a bittersweet dark chocolate.

The generally acknowledged as first otome, "Angelique", will be given a 20th anniversary remake called, "Angelique Retour". There will also be a manga version on the December issue of Sho Comi magazine. The magazine will be shipped on November 15. More info on ANN.

Check out the full video of the OP song, "My Sweet Heaven" by Gero, for the two OVA episodes of "Brothers Conflict". The episodes are entitled "Seiya" ("Holy Night") and "Honmei" ("Favorite" or "Possible Winner"). More info from CR.

Vote for "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" in the Final Rounds of Goodreads' Choice Awards 2014 Best Young Adult Fiction of  2014. I have a feeling that the chances for a movie adaptation will be higher if it wins this major award.

Manga Review: Ozmafia

Ozmafia (2 volumes ongoing) - art by Yurino Tsukigase and story by Poni-Pachet Sy and Hobibox

Fuka wakes up without memory in a town divided between mafia families. She falls under the protection of the Oz Family.  Even though the title is a dead giveaway that it's going to be a fairy tale and mob, I've always had these preconceived notions that it'll be sweet and wholesome because of the soft colors and art. It's cute alright but there's a sinister feel in their dialogues and situations. But despite that, the omake really cracked me up. The humor is spot on sarcastically funny.

The characters doesn't use the obvious names of Dorothy etc. Lion was easy to recognize thanks to his clothing. But it took me longer to figure out who Tin Man was though. His personality is so "charming". And logically whoever is left should be Scarecrow. There's a scene where they pointed out that they're all men in the house, so she has to live in a different house. I find it very gentlemanly and a fresh breakaway from the cohabitation trope. By the way, I've also created 'amnesia' and 'mafia' labels or tags.

The obvious fairy tale names were given to the characters of the other families (or other classic stories). I really though Scarlet was a girl! I can sense there's a hidden secret in their family. All the characters looks suspicious including the heroine. But bad news, the project hasn't been worked on for a long time. On a bright side, this is based on otome so you can implore Google as to what happens next.

Watch the second PV of the new season of Kamisama Hajimemashita or Kami Kiss. From ANN.

Check out the PV for the movie, "Strobe Edge". Taken via the official movie twitter account.

Mayo Shinjo will most likely not write shojo again. She prefers BL and drawing boys over girls. Some of her works that are reverse harem are "Midnight Children", "Haou Airen" and "Summer Days 17". More details from ANN. Photo taken from her twitter account.
