Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan- 12 episodes

While searching for her missing father, Chizuri finds herself taken in by the Shinsengumis. It's based on a historical otome game. The setting is warring late Edo period and the characters are based on historical characters of Japan. Then throw in bishie samurais, supernatural elements and downplayed gender bender. I didn't want to get my hopes too high thinking it would be another NeoRomance clone. I was way off wrong! I don't even know where to start. It's like a noir for otome-turned-anime genre. Ok I'll start with the story. To be honest I'm not familiar with the historical material but they were able to pull off a credible historical story with a reverse harem going on minus the cheesiness. I like the fact that it wasn't trying too hard to sell the reverse harem factor. I thought the 12 episodes is going to be too short but the fast pacing was executed very well. The character designs, the animation and the color palettes are all amazing. I think it's at par with the CG version. The screenshots from the endings of the otome are making me swooooon! At first I can't differentiate some of the characters but as I get to know them I can't get enough of them. Actually the lead bishie Hijikata is my least favorite. Sorry for Hijikata fans. I still can't decide between Okita, Todo, Saito and of course I fell for the villain again, Kazama. I didn't have a problem with Chizuri's naivety and sincerity, because sometime I find it too annoying for some other animes. The anime ended in a very sad note but fret not since there will be a second season this fall. I can't wait to see them in modern clothes. I had a hunch they will have those second set of clothes on the next season with all the art scans out there. There's also two manga adaptations which was a major spoiler for me so don't read it yet if you're not yet done with this. I can't wait to watch the highschool parody too.

    I f****** love this anime. Oh why are the ratings so low in the US? Then again, they haven't played the game so I guess that is a good reason. I mean the anime was made for those who did played the game. I don't care how useless Chizuru is. She's like that in the game too, and yet the game is still quite popular. (No, I haven't played it nor have it) I actually like her. At least we have hot samurais saving her ass every episode.

    Unfortunately it's the only anime of it's kind. There's a lot of stylized Shinsengumi otomes with manga versions. Let's just hope they make it to animes. You may try the second season if you haven't seen it yet Hakuouki Hekketsuroku.

    Uhmmm hey, well there's this manga called Meine Liebe..and it's reverse harem, but not completely, since she has some "girl friends" too. I guess it revolves around the royalty theme, since they use "sama" and "dono"...I stopped reading it since the story is so-so (too predictable and boring...? just not my type) The art is so-so as well.. could be better. It also got animated. so yeahh...

    Btw, this anime was sad as hell... people be dyin' everywhere... it was waaay too sad. And she didn't even end up with the guy I wanted her to. (SAITOU! or KAZAMA!) ...it's just depressing...fuck.

    I LOVED IT A LOT.

Manga Review: Alice in Bishounen-Land Vol. 2 (final volume)

Alice in Bishounen-Land Volume 2 by Yushi Kawata Art by Yukito With the help of a new member or two, Alice and the newly-rebranded idol group Triple S progresses in the battles. Disclaimer A review copy was provided by the publisher. Check out the first volume review . The first volume is so weird but trust me it gets weirder. But once you got used to the humor, everything seems funnier this time around. The randomness of the backstories, the non-stop comical situations, and cheesy jokes. I'm loving them all now including the minor characters. The one thing that balances it all out is Alice. She's the shining beacon of reason and her spot-on observations make it more laughable.    For something crazy, it briefly touches 'beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder'. And it's not in your face at all.     Anyway, I'm Falling In Love With You Vol. 1 by Haruka Mitsui Mizuho grew up with her friends in Koigama Highland. The springtime of her youth awaits her as she turns seventeen. Anime Review: Kiskis! My Boyfriends are Mint Candies!

Kiskis! My Boyfriend are Mint Candies!- 4 episodes Tang Tang meet guys who each represent a flavor of mint candies. It has a catchy, cute opening. At first there's a different feel on it which I can't pinpoint. And then I realized that they are talking in Chinese! This is my first completed Chinese animation. Well since it was way too easy to finish it. It's 5-minute ONA for 4 episodes. I think this premiered last June 4. But the first Chinese animation I watched is still currently airing (unconfirmed reverse harem), Phantom in the Twilight, which is a collaboration between Japan and China. Oh back to back Chinese reviews after The Flame's Daughter. Is China going to be booming with reverse harem now?

Levels of Reverse Harem

  The video above is Levels of Reverse Harem version 2 (also posted  here ) Reverse Harem titles were very limited when I first started the blog eleven years ago. I was flexible with many titles where it's only one or two guys interested in the female protagonist and other gray areas. But we are now at a point where I can be strict with labeling reverse harem. Let's start with the classification of reverse harem-ness. This is for my sake too if in case I run off course again. 1. Five Flowers - This is literally reverse harem. The heroine has a harem of her own in her inner chamber. And we only have one example for this, manga and drama, Ooku. UPDATE: Please check STAGES OF REVERSE HAREM for more examples.

Drama Review: I Have Three Boyfriends

  I Have Three Boyfriends kdrama- 10 episodes  The story starts with Ra Hee going on a date after another with her three boyfriends. She's frantically trying not to get caught. The drama will unravel how she got herself into this dilemma.  This is the first reverse harem I've seen about cheating female main character. Certainly, this is bound to happen in reverse harem. BTW,  My favorite boyfriend is the domineering director.   It was not believable at first but it got me hooked. The story is milking the coincidences to the hilt.   The ending is unexpected and here all along I was under the impression that it's going to be open-ended. Sorry, to keep this review short as it's a short drama with  15 minutes runtime per episode.  This is the last of my backlog reviews from a couple of years ago.
