Anime Review: Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp

Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp anime - 12 episodes based on webnovel

Elise is a spoiled princess who is executed and reincarnated in modern Earth. She turns into a new leaf and becomes a surgeon. Then she goes back in her time before the events that will lead her to her demise.

This is a mix of my first impression here on the blog, mini-impressions, and mini-review from Patreon. And with some new insights.

The premise of Elise has two layers of twists to the reincarnation and time loop tropes. For the first episode alone among the three anime,  (7th Loop and Demon Prince of Momochi House) goes to Elise. In a short period, we felt like we knew her already and felt her sincerity to help. She's relatable in her reincarnated era. It took me a while to reconcile that they are the same person. But of course, gradually, the Princess Elise version won me over. But being a prodigy does not cut it for me. It's highly suspicious that she can perform surgery all from textbook reading with no mentor and practical experience. Still, the operations that Elise performs hooks you in the way medical dramas do.

Dr. Elise shares similarities with the other two winter 2024 anime. Like with 7th Loop, they go back in time to stop their deaths which entails breaking the engagement and applying their gained medical knowledge. Meanwhile, with Demon Prince, the similarity shook the reverse harem core but good thing the third guy appeared by the eighth episode. At least the three guys here are getting flustered with Elise unlike with the other two anime. This was clearly labeled as reverse harem from the get-go by fans but in the anime, it was just mildly reverse harem. And all guys are so vanilla. (lol) Better than nothing, right? Phew. At least one hit the bull's eye of being four flowers. (See Levels of Reverse Harem) No complaints with the animation and I love the guys' visual but I have a problem with Elise's thin eyebrows. (Haha I'm sorry!)

Doctor Elise reminds me of The Saint Magic's Power is Omnipotent as it feels so wholesome, and relaxing but it keeps you on your toes with the medical aspect. There's no super scheming villain that will keep you stressed like how royalty stories do in mahwa/webtoons. The finale is sadly short of spectacular. It has the recipe for a good ending but it felt like it ran out of steam. It's because everyone is too nice or the anime as a whole is so nourishing to a fault. But I'm saying this from a place of love. I love Elise.

This is the second reverse harem web novel that has been animated after Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion. Let me know your thoughts on the anime and the webnovel and webtoon too. The webtoon version is currently on Lezhin, Tapas, Pocketcomics and Tappytoon. Now this post wraps up my reviews of winter reverse harem. What's your favorite among the three?
