Reverse Harem Garden

The homeless Nanami is wandering aimlessly due to her father's debt. She meets Mikage who transfers the "god' seal to her. She becomes the land god of a rundown shrine with guardians, Onikiri and Kotetsu and fox familiar, Tomoe.  Someone suggested the manga years ago but I didn't find it as reverse harem then. When I found out it was going to be animated, I was on a lookout for it since I enjoyed the manga. But lo and behold the poster looks so reverse harem! It was only then that I realized the significance of the three beasts lore: fox, crow and snake.  It's a device prevalent in mangas especially in reverse harem titles like Love Monster, Black Bird etc. The anime reminds me of Maid-Sama. It's light, refreshing, funny and sweet. The set up also reminds me of Maid-Sama, although there's other guys (erm beasts) who are after her, the main story is really about Nanami and Tomoe. The third of TVN's Flower Boy Series, "Flower Boy Next Door", will premier in Jan.7. It's about a shut-in, Park Shin Hye, who dreams of her neighbors: Front Neighbor, Next-door Neighbor, Back Neighbor, Side Neighbor, and Across-the-way Neighbor. More info from dramabeans .

There will be a bundled OVA when the original anime DVD of Hiiro no Kakera is released on March 28. The title is "Totsugeki! Tonari no Ikemens"and will comically feature the private lives of the guardians. From ANN and MAL .

The news of a harem series reversed into a 'reverse harem' brings back to a realization that I was harem fan before I became reverse harem fan. Okay repeat 10 times. But seriously, I have nothing against harem but after Fushigi Yugi left a big void inside of me and after discovering reverse harem in Ouran, I had to crossover and there's no turning back.  After stumbling upon news that one of my old favorite animes was turned into a reverse harem. I just had to watch the opening sequence again and it brough back of a nostalgic wave of my old harem favorites. My favorite shows then were Saber Marionette J,  Gatekeepers, Oh my Goddess, Tenchu Muyo, Sakura Wars, Love Hina and Vandread. Here's some of the catchy opening songs I've loved:

The Sakura Taisen (Sakura Wars) franchise has been a given a spin-off through a gender switch. Neko Miyabi with 5 bishies beat enemies in the guise of imperial opera company named Kanadegumi. There was a manga and OVA released last September and a stage play ran from Nov. 1 -11.  Check out the anime and stage play PVs above.  More info from crunchyroll and ANN . Ore-sama Kingdom: Gelände de Love Choco no Maki - OVA Nono is a young manga artist who finds herself surrounded by 3 cute guys. It's an OVA included on the February issue of Ciao based on Chitose Yagami's manga. Sorry there's no subs yet but not to worry it's just 11 minutes so someone will have the heart to translate it soon XD. -originally posted on Feb. 28, 2011 UPDATE: Episodes 1 and 2 subs are now out! It has a Yumeiro Patissierie and Shugo Chara feel on it but minus the Thumbelina-sized flying creatures. I can't confirm if this is already complete or not.

  The Thousandth Man / Chunbunjjae Namja - 8 episodes Mi Jin is a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox, who must devour 1,000 livers from men in a millennium to become human or else she will disappear like a bubble. But she will only take it from a man who truly loves her and is willing to offer it to her. Will she get her thousandth man/liver before her time runs out? It's not a straight up reverse harem but if she haven't eaten all the 999 men she would have a very big harem! Of course, not all of them lived in the same era. The first half of the series did show candidates of men to fill the thousandth spot so we can still tag this under "related". It was light and fun but it just not one of my favorite dramas. But the series is short so it wasn't tedious to watch. This might be a bit spoiler-ish but with all its fun and lightness, the drama ended in a sad note which make me feel a bit empty. Not in a negative way, but in a way it haunts me and makes me sad ...

Hakuouki Sekkaroku 6 OVAs - completed The OVA took place during the Zuisouroku events. They decided to dress up Chizuru again as geisha to infiltrate a secret meeting. I'm sure it was just an excuse to see Chizuru all dolled up. Each episode features a shinsengumi and their point of view of what happened in the story. It was originally 5 episodes featuring Souji, Saitou, Sanosuke, Heisuke and Hijikata. Then an extra episode was added featuring Kazama. Of all the Hakuouki series, this is the most light-hearted and sweetest. This is what we fangirls have wanted them to be, alive and fawning over Chizuri's beauty. They're all affected by Chizuri but nothing beats Saito's reaction which is my favorite episode by the way. The OVA also spawned a manga adaptation.

Super Darling! by Aya Shouoto 2 volumes - ongoing Sakuya Tohno has an air-like presence. Literally, no one can see her. She makes a wish with the thousand-year old sakura tree for happiness and then right then and there 4 new students shows up all fighting to be her fated person. I thought it's going to be just a fluffy manga but Aya Shouto once again dazzles us with her frilly drawings and flair for the supernatural. 

Himegimi to Sanbiki no Kemono (The Princess and the Three Beasts) by Mitsubachi Miyuki 4 volumes (complete) Violet is the 6th generation princess of the Kingdom of Alba. She becomes the target of the thieves known as the three beasts: Crow, Snake and Fox. I find the exploits of the day a bit boring and I find the conflict and build up to the romance a bit slow.  But I like the character designs. I read the 1st chapter before but I was only able to pick it up again because it had similarity with my favorite ongoing anime, Kamisama Hajimemashita.(which will be on a separate future entry :D ) And inspired with the beasts theme, I've created a tag "beast" for other reverse harem works with supernatural beasts or animal transformations that you might want to check out.

The winner for Arcana couple poll is the Liberta and Felicita tandem. Personally, I think the storyline favors Nova so I was surprised that Liberta is actually more popular. Shima x Dan: My Life with Boys on an Island - oneshot by Yutori Houjou and Kako Mochizuki Minato transfers to an island with population of 157 with 5 boys along her age. And she's the ONLY girl in the island along their age. I'm inspired to create another tag for this cliche: the "marriage game"! Think Arcana Famiglia and Hanasakeru Seishounen.

To The Beautiful You 16 episodes Goo Jae-hee (Ashiya) enters the all-boy Genie High School to help Kang Tae-joon (Sano) jump again. She was able to blend in pretending as a boy and even making friends with Cha Eun-gyeol  (Nakutsu). This is the second reverse harem Japanese manga after Hana Yori Dango that gets adapted first into tdrama, then jdrama and finally a kdrama. Yes, in the same orderly fashion. SM Entertainment decided to remake this after the success of idol-based Dream High in 2011. It's a great move that it took a year for the drama to air because the summer of 2011 was filled with 3 gender bender dramas: Ouran High School Host Club jdrama, Ikemen Desu Ne Japanese remake and another Hana Kimi jdrama remake.  After a year of rumors they have hired the same director of Boys Over Flowers and casted idols Sulli Choi from f(x) and Choi Min Ho from Shinhee. The town of Regalo is protected by the organization, Arcana Famiglia, whose powers are drawn from contracts with cards.  The head of the family announces the Arcana Duello to which the victor will succeed him and wins the hand of his daughter, Felicita, for marriage.  I had very high hopes with the first episode. The premise is action-packed with very cool and dark character designs. Bad boy types in dark suits plus the girl literally kicks ass. My favorite bishies are Debito and Luca. I also love their Italian names and phrases. It's a breath of fresh air from all the reverse harems. Surprisingly, the reverse harem set up is neatly divided into 3 by generations and the trio of Felicita-Nova-Liberta reminds me of Tohru-Kyo-Yuki. I really love the catchy opening song too which for some reason reminds me of old animes. But man, they stretched out 11 episodes with character background and fillers. It's okay to have random episodes if not for the fact that the character...
